Review from the performance:
" ... the program was a triumph for Szewczyk, who, undaunted by some very difficult music, showed stellar technique, consistently ringing tone, and a thorough commitment to the core and spirit of each piece.
To single out just a few of them, Carson Cooman's "The Doors in the Sky" was passionate and attractive, with lots of double and triple stops.
Hiro Morozumi's "Real Phone Key" featured blues, bluegrass, and foot-tapping.
John Kennedy's lyric and virtuosic "FP (For Piotr)" made playful use of pizzicato and artificial harmonics with Kennedy's haracteristic sense of humor.
Mason Bates' "Blue Berceuse" is a brief, lyrical charmer.
Patrick Castillo's "Cirque," had a fragmented, Webernian quality with expressives trills and tremolos.
Moritz Eggert's protean "Idyl" included whistling and the reading of headlines to the accompaniment of a plucked low G, then ended with Szewczyk actually plunging his bow through the sheet music.
As is his prerogative, Szewczyk started and ended with pieces of his own. I especially liked the first one, a bright, flashy, angular work with overtones of Bartok and Shostakovich. "
